WAYFARER SAT COM GRANT
December 2002

Steven Leach, skipper and owner of the ‘Wayfarer’ has been awarded at Objective 1 Fisheries grant for over £1,500. The grant will be used to install a satellite communication system on board the vessel.

The ‘Wayfarer’ works mainly in the Atlantic to the West of Cornwall and lands fish at Newlyn, Plymouth, Brixham and occasionally in France. The new communication system will ensure that the crew can contact their families when they are out at sea on longer fishing trips, which will ease the minds of the crew and their families. The system will also be able to receive accurate weather information, which is extremely important in potentially hazardous conditions.

When a boat lands their fish ready for sale on the market it is essential that the timing is right. With this equipment the crew will be able to contact the merchants who will give them information on the best time to land to make sure that the market has a continuous supply of fish.

Clare Leverton, Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager stated "Support is available for fishermen that take the initiative and proactively seek the best prices for their catch. The Objective 1 Programme is aimed at increasing the value of fishing in Cornwall and projects such as this one are simple and ideal. Any skipper owner who is contemplating installing a SATCOM systems is encouraged to give South West PESCA a call – 01872 270333."

Steven Leach, Skipper and owner of the ‘Wayfarer’ added "Since the demise of Lands End radio, communications to the West of Cornwall has been virtually none existent like it was back in the sailing boat days. Installing the Satcom system has bought us back into the 21st Century."
