GRANT GO-AHEAD
FOR SILVER QUEEN REVAMP
February 2002
John Trewin,
owner of the Silver Queen has been given the green light to modernise
his new 25 year old vessel with the help of a £1,000 Objective
1 Fisheries grant.
John, a 32 year
old fisherman from Cadgwith, is investing in a second hand vessel
to secure his future in fishing. John is the first fisherman on
the Lizard to secure an Objective 1 fisheries grant.
The grant will
enable the vessel to be upgraded with a brand new wheelhouse, deck
and storage area. The project will provide the crew with more space,
a sheltered area to work and storage to protect fishing gear and
fish quality.
The project
will help ensure high quality fish is landed for local fisher merchants
and a new crews job is created. There will also be improvements
in safety on the vessel and crew comfort.
Alison Elvey,
Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager stated, "This is an
excellent opportunity for John to secure his future in fishing.
Objective 1 fisheries grants can help projects happen whether big
or small and this project, although small, will have a significant
impact on John's future as a Cadgwith based fisherman."
John Trewin,
owner of the Silver Queen stated, "Grant aid and funding for
a fishermen to do anything has been non-existent for years. Therefore,
I was very surprised to hear about the Objective 1 Fisheries grant
and thought why not try, as I've got nothing to loose.
With
Alison Elvey to guide me, the process of applying for the grant
was quick, very efficient and simple to achieve. To other fishermen
thinking of modernising their boats I would say, take advantage
of the Objective 1 Fisheries grant. Opportunities for fishermen
are very rare, do not miss out on this one!".
