SCILLY ISLES FISHERMAN GETS FUNDING FOR SHELLFISH STORAGE
July 2001
Mark Pender, a shellfish fisherman from the Isles
of Scilly, has gained Objective 1 fisheries funding to develop a
holding area for crab storage and boiling premises in his garden
shed.
Currently the fisherman stores his shellfish in
store pots at sea and has to pick up crab as and when the market
demands. This is very dangerous, as, in all weathers he rows out to
the pots, so by converting his shed he will have a safe storage
area.
The project will also enable crab to be boiled
ready to supply catering businesses on the Islands. The quality of
both live and cooked shellfish will be improved due to reduced
handling of the shellfish to meet market needs.
This project will secure one full time job as a
fisherman and secure two summer jobs.
Alison Elvey, Objective One
Programme Manager has stated
"I am very pleased to see Isles of Scilly
fishermen taking advantage of the funding on offer. This project
demonstrates how fishermen can support their businesses by
undertaking small scale processing and meeting market demand."
Mark Pender commented "I am most grateful for
the Objective 1 funding that has enabled me to carry the project
forward and make my fishing business more sustainable. I will be
able to offer an improved service to my customers."
