Looe fisherman Victor Henwood owner and
skipper of the ‘Paravel’ has been awarded an Objective 1
Fisheries grant for over £4,000 to improve crew conditions on board.
The trawler will have a new sleeping bunk
fitted so that an extra crewman can be taken on. To further improve
conditions heaters will also be installed throughout the
accommodation area.
To reduce noise in the wheelhouse it will be
lined and seats and lockers fitted so that the fisherman can store
their personal gear. These small alterations will ease conditions
for the crew especially when taking longer trips out at sea.
The deck of the ‘Paravel’ is also set
for modernisation. An extension to the shelter on the deck will be
installed. Because nets and other equipment are so large and heavy,
many jobs cannot be conducted under cover, which is tough on the
crew especially in hazardous weather. With the new extended shelter
the crew will be protected and so will the fish when it is caught.
The fishroom will be insulated to allow for
more ice to be brought out on long trips. This is especially
important for the quality of the fish, keeping it chilled for
market.
Clare Leverton, Objective 1 Fisheries
Programme Manager stated "This project shows how Objective 1
grants can be used to improve the quality of the catch, crew comfort
and the grants available for sustainable fishing methods. Boat
owners should contact South West PESCA Ltd for advice on 01872
270333".
Victor Henwood of the ‘Paravel’
commented "I am very grateful for the financial aid given by
Objective 1. It has proved to be beneficial on board my vessel and
will dramatically improve the working conditions for the crew."
