'MYSTIQUE' CREW COMFORT AWARD
25th May 2002

Looe based skipper Dave Bond, owner of the 'Mystique' has been awarded a £1,798 Objective One Fisheries grant to improve crew accommodation.

The award will provide a sheltered galley area for cooking and a seated area where the crew can eat their meals and rest together. This will mean the crew will be able to prepare food undercover protecting it from the elements.

Electricity will be fitted on board the 'Mystique' so the crew can use an electric kettle and microwave, which is far safer than the current gas cooking equipment.

Toilet facilities will also be installed, which will dramatically improve conditions on board.

Alison Elvey Objective One Fisheries Programme Manager stated "Improving crew working conditions on board vessels is key to ensuring crew are retained and recruited into the fishing industry."

Dave Bond, skipper of the 'Mystique' added "After having the vessel built on a very tight budget, the grant has enabled me to achieve these improvements far quicker than I would otherwise have been able to. Like so many young men in the industry that have worked their way up, the first step is to get a basic boat to earn the money and from there you start refining it into an efficient, well equipped vessel that will hopefully secure your future in the fishing industry."
