The Newlyn based fish processor, Mrs Cod, has been awarded an Objective One fisheries grant to expand and add value to Cornish fish. The processor will lease new premises and equip them to a high standard of hygiene, as well as providing staff with a canteen area.

The conversion and equipment assisted with the grant will allow the company to produce a range of different products from fish fillets, skinned fish and other add value products to both the UK and European markets.

In addition the company hope to expand their range of species offered to customers, so supporting the fish catching sector diversifying away from stocks under pressure to less well known fish. At least ten jobs will be created by the project over the next two years.

Alison Elvey, Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager commented, "Any project which adds value to Cornwall’s catch is good news for the fishing industry. In addition, projects which promote the less well known species of fish to UK markets should be encouraged. Mrs Cod is a good example of a company moving forward in a sector undergoing immense change."
