MEVAGISSEY HARBOUR AWARDED CRANE GRANT
July 2003

Mevagissey Harbour Trustees have been awarded an Objective 1 Fisheries Grant for £4,500 to upgrade the jetty hoist by installing a new crane. This will enable the fishermen to change the fishing gears on their vessels more quickly.

The fishing fleet moored in Mevagissey Harbour consists of 61 registered fishing boats, more than half of which fish full time.

This will not only help the fishermen but also reduce the maintenance costs for the Harbour and give more space to the Harbour itself.

Hugh Bowles, Mevagissey Harbour Master stated "The modernising of the jetty crane will enable the quick and efficient lifting on and off net bins and fishing gear from the boats. Not only will this be a safer way of handing heavy bins, but will also reduce the time spent with fork lift and operator and will ultimately reduce operating costs."

Alison Elvey, Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager stated "This is an important port infrastructure project which will greatly help the fishermen and is exactly the type of project we looking for to fund. Any other harbours interested in funding should contact the team at South West Pesca for information on 01872 270333. "
