OBJECTIVE 1
GRANT FOR LOOE HARBOUR COMMISSIONERS
September 2002
The Looe Harbour Commissioners have been awarded an Objective 1
Fisheries grant for over £8,000 to upgrade a fish packing unit
making it more modern and efficient.
The unit on Buller Quay will be completely modernised so that
employees have a separate area to change into suitable overalls
before entering the room where the fish is waiting to be packed. New
washing facilities will also be created. The walls and ceiling will
be lined to make cleaning easier and to further improve hygiene
standards.
Looe Harbour Commissioners have
successfully received approval for four other projects with the help
of Objective 1 fisheries aid. These include upgrading a chill room
for storing fish bait and waste, upgrading the harbour fog signal
and pier light, modernising another fish packing unit and adding new
ice making facilities to the harbour.
Clare Leverton, Objective 1 Fisheries
Programme Manager stated "Cornwall has the advantage of a high
quality resource through the fish landed in the County. Using
Objective 1 funds to improve the quality of processing units adds
value to this local resource and keeps jobs in the County."
Tina Hicks of the Looe Harbour Commissioners
commented "By upgrading our quayside
units, we hope to retain the fish merchants who currently operate
from the port, thus supporting the continuation of a strong and
viable fish market in Looe.
In addition, the improved standards
of the units will ensure that the fish exported from the port is of
the best possible quality, thus maintaining the ports reputation for
supplying prime fish to local and other UK/EU areas alike."
