NEW PIER LIGHT AND FOG HORN FOR LOOE HARBOUR
July 2001
An Objective 1 fisheries grant will enable Looe
Harbour Commissioners to provide state of the art navigational
equipment to help Looe fishermen travel safely into and out of the
harbour.
The grant will enable the harbour to purchase a
bright and weatherproof pier light to guide fishermen to port and
help them land their catch safely. As the harbour is tidal, the
fishermen have to wait for the right tide to land their catch, which
is often at night when it is dark, so the light will be of great
help.
The grant will also help fund a new fog detector
so fishing vessels can navigate into the harbour in the fog. This is
especially important in the summer months when Looe Harbour suffers
from fog and mist banks, making navigation into the Harbour very
difficult. The fog detector will now be self-activating in the fog.
Alison Elvey, Objective One Programme Manager
stated "Ensuring a safe passage and landing for Looe’s
fishing vessels is paramount in this dangerous industry. Safety is
the key to ensuring young fishermen enter the industry, so this
project will, in a small way, help protect the future of Looe’s
fishing fleet."
Looe Harbour Commissioners
commented
"The passage into Looe
Harbour is not an easy
one, if approaching from the south. Mariners must navigate around
Looe Island avoiding a savage outcrop of rocks on the eastern side,
which have claimed many a casualty over the years. If approaching
from the West, an extremely narrow rocky channel must be navigated.
In addition, this particular stretch of coastline
is renowned for fog banks, whereby the land is frequently obscured
from view whilst mariners are only a few yards from the shore. The
Objective 1 grant will allow the Pier light and fog horn to be
replaced, the new equipment will be more efficient, will reduce
noise pollution, will be visually less obstructive, and most
importantly, should ensure that the local fishermen, together with
the visiting craft, have a safe passage into the Harbour."
