MODERN FISH
PACKING UNIT SECURED FOR LOOE
August 2001
Looe Harbour Commissioners have been awarded an Objective 1
Fisheries grant to provide a modern and efficient packing unit at
Looe Harbour.
Fish merchants and processors require
modern premises to meet market demand for their fish. Therefore, the
provision of this unit will provide much needed premises for the
fish buyers/packer who operate from the port.
The unit will be upgraded to meet merchant’s
needs by installing hygienic wall, floor and ceiling linings to help
clean the premises and a porch provided for employees to change into
their overalls.
The new packing unit will not only support the
merchants but will also indirectly secure fishermen’s jobs in Looe
and improve the port income as a whole.
Alison Elvey, Objective One Fisheries
Programme Manager commented, "There
is a shortage of suitable units for fish merchants in Looe,
especially with such close proximity to the fish market. By
providing a modern unit for the merchants, the Harbour Commissioners
are helping secure Looe as a modern thriving fishing port."
Robert Newton, Chairman of Looe Harbour
Commissioners commented, "By
upgrading our quayside units, we hope to retain the fish merchants
who currently operate from the port, thus supporting the
continuation of a strong and viable fish market in Looe.
In addition, the improved
hygiene standards of the units will ensure that the fish exported
from the port is of the best possible quality, thus maintaining the
ports reputation for supplying prime fish to local and other UK and
European areas alike."
