LOOE KEEPS FISH WASTE ODOUR DOWN
September 2001

Looe Harbour Commissioners have recently received just under £10,000 of Objective 1 grant aid for a chilled storage area to keep fish waste.

Instead of individual fish merchants storing fish waste and crab bait outside the fish packing units for weekly disposal, the Harbour authority is providing a chilled store to keep the waste off the streets.

During the summer, the smell of the fish waste can be unbearable, affecting the area around the port of Looe. The new storage area will now wipe out all of these problems. In addition, by storing and disposing of waste together, rather than as individual merchants, there will be a cost saving to the ports fish businesses.

Alison Elvey Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager commented: "This project will reduce the cost of disposing of fish waste and also reduce the impact of fish waste on the local community. Projects like this, where harbour authorities and the industry are working together, are welcomed by Objective 1."
