'MFV
INTUITION' FISH QUALITY OBJECTIVE 1 GRANT
November 2002
Mark Rowse skipper and owner of the ‘MFV
Intuition’ has been awarded an Objective 1 Fisheries grant for over
£500. The ‘Intuition’ a crabbing vessel that fishes out of Newlyn
will use the grant aid to have a water pump system fitted to improve
fish quality.
Whilst the boat is out at sea the crabs are
stored in a compartment filled with seawater, which keeps them alive
and in a good condition until they are landed. Maintaining the
quality of the water is a very strenuous task and any failure could
mean that the crabs might be unfit for sale.
The new equipment will pump air
through a system connected to the storage tank, which will result in
the shellfish being landed in better condition and reduce the
mortality rate.
Clare Leverton, Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager stated "The
purchase of technical equipment for vessels to improve quality of
the catch can be funded through Objective 1. This is one of the ways
Cornish fishermen can achieve the best possible price for their hard
work."
Mark Rowse, skipper and owner of the
‘MFV Intuition’ added "The new equipment will increase the
quality of my catch, reduce the amount of crab unfit for sale, which
will give me better prices on the market. The tank will also reduce
pollution."
