HAYLE SHELLFISH MERCHANT RECEIVES ICE MACHINE GRANT
June 2003

Harold Hawkins, a Hayle based shellfish merchant has been awarded an Objective 1 Fisheries Grant for over £1,000 to buy an ice-making machine for his factory.

The icemaker will be installed at the factory and will reduce transport costs of bringing ice from Newlyn.

The business, which has been established for over 12 years hopes to move from merchanting to processing shellfish and add value to shellfish products.

Harold Hawkins, a partner of Hawkins Fish said, "I am delighted to receive this award from Objective 1 to re-equip my factory and look forward to extending the project further in the New Year. This has been a great help to my business and others in the industry should also take advantage of the money available."

Clare Leverton, Programme Manager of South West Pesca added "Processing shellfish in Cornwall is a great way of adding value to the Cornish catch. Mr Hawkins is fully aware of this and is hoping to make further changes to the business with the aid of Objective 1 funding."
