Andy Giles and his vessel, the ‘Guiding Light’, will be the first
skipper in Looe to benefit from an Objective 1 Fisheries grant.
Nearly £2,000 of grant will be used to improve crew comfort on
the ‘Guiding Light’, securing 2 fishermen’s jobs in the industry and
helping to secure fish landings for Looe market.
The ‘Guiding Light’ will benefit from a satellite phone to ensure
good communications with fish merchants to ensure that the fish on
board is demanded and also improving communication for safety
reasons. A shelter deck will provide cover while the fishermen land
fish and mend nets protecting the crew from the weather and waves as
well as reduce fish damage. Finally heaters and a water tank will
provide benefits for the crew while fishing and resting during the
trip.
Alison Elvey Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager commented
"I am pleased to see a young skipper like Andy taking advantage
of grants on offer to help secure a future in the industry. Projects
to improve the working conditions on vessels will help attract and
retain crew, which are lacking in the industry. I hope more boats in
Looe take advantage of
