LOOE FISHERMAN BENEFITS FROM GRANTS
December 2001

Andy Giles and his vessel, the ‘Guiding Light’, will be the first skipper in Looe to benefit from an Objective 1 Fisheries grant.

Nearly £2,000 of grant will be used to improve crew comfort on the ‘Guiding Light’, securing 2 fishermen’s jobs in the industry and helping to secure fish landings for Looe market.

The ‘Guiding Light’ will benefit from a satellite phone to ensure good communications with fish merchants to ensure that the fish on board is demanded and also improving communication for safety reasons. A shelter deck will provide cover while the fishermen land fish and mend nets protecting the crew from the weather and waves as well as reduce fish damage. Finally heaters and a water tank will provide benefits for the crew while fishing and resting during the trip.

Alison Elvey Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manager commented "I am pleased to see a young skipper like Andy taking advantage of grants on offer to help secure a future in the industry. Projects to improve the working conditions on vessels will help attract and retain crew, which are lacking in the industry. I hope more boats in Looe take advantage of the funding on offer".

Andy Giles, skipper of the ‘Guiding Light’ explained, "I would like to thank Alison for her expertise and help and advise in completing the forms necessary to obtain the grant. I couldn’t have managed without her help".
