'GARYM' FAMILY FISHING VESSEL GAINS FISHERIES GRANT
July 2001

A Newlyn based family fishing vessel the "GARYM" has gained Objective 1 Fisheries funding for equipment for a fish quality system on board and to provide crew comfort facilities.

With a new fish room, gutting tables, fish washers and more the vessel can implement a full quality system, which will ensure fish are moved as quickly as possible from the net to the fish room. By reducing the time taken to pack the fish away, it’s low temperature can be maintained and quality assured.

Crew comfort is vital in an industry finding it hard to retain and recruit crew. The provision of a new shelter deck and improvements to the living quarters and wheelhouse will modernize the vessel and provide facilities for crew members when out on ten day trips.

Alison Elvey Objective One Programme Manager commented "The modernisation of the 'GaryM' will assist the retention and recruitment of crew and improve fish quality during the vessels trips. By installing a quality system on board the vessel will ensure it’s fish reach the market in top quality condition."

Timmy Boyle, owner and skipper of the 'GaryM' commented: "Having recently purchased this vessel gaining Objective 1 funding has been an absolute godsend the financial help the fishing industry desperately needs to upgrade our vessels. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Alison Elvey for all her hard work. Penzance Marine services who completed the majority of the work. With all special thanks to Graham Davenport. My bank manager John Stevens who like most of us is over worked and under paid. Nathan de Rozarieux Chief Executive of the CFPO and finally Godfrey Adams of Trelawney Fish Newlyn who have all helped significantly."
