Mr Frazer an Isles of Scilly fisherman has
been awarded an Objective 1 fisheries grant to purchase three
insulated fish bins vital for transporting crab and lobster to the
mainland.
To get his shellfish to market, Mr Frazer has
to collect the fish from his store pots, which are basically cages
to store shellfish located on the seabed, load the shellfish onto
his boat then offload onto the Scillonian. Once on the Cornish
mainland the fish are collected by the merchant and make their way
to markets. However, during the trip, taking up to seven hours, some
shellfish die due to the high temperatures, especially in the summer
months.
The fish bins have an insulated lining inside
them to keep the shellfish at a constant temperature throughout
their journey from the Isles of Scilly to the merchant. The bins are
important to maintain fish quality to secure the markets on the
mainland in the future. The project will help secure two jobs and
create one part time as well as improve the viability of the
business.
Alison Elvey, Objective One Programme Manager
commented "Fishermen on the Isles of
Scilly lose money in the transportation of shellfish due to high
temperatures leading to mortalities mainly in the summer months.
This project will help Andy Frazer maintain quality of his
shellfish, by maintaining temperatures to keep the shellfish alive
and happy. Anything Objective 1 can do to help fishermen from the
Isles of Scilly maintain shellfish quality is good news for local
fishermen."
