FALMOUTH BAY
OYSTERS TO INCREASE LOCAL EMPLOYMENT
August 2001
Falmouth Bay Oysters has
recently received an Objective 1 fisheries grant to provide
equipment to process oysters.
The money will be invested to buy equipment to
purify and grade oysters and mussels, which will help develop their
export markets in Europe and the Far East.
Falmouth has a well known traditional native
oyster fishery. However, this project will help the marketing of
oysters further by promoting quality oysters to the retail,
wholesale, catering and for export.
The company at present supplies many local
Falmouth restaurants and hotels and many well-known London
restaurants with top quality Cornish oysters. With the addition of
this new plant this will enable the company to expand at a far
greater rate bringing greater prospects to the Falmouth fishery.
In addition Falmouth Bay Oysters will create
two new jobs in the local area, increasing employment within
Cornwall.
Alison Elvey, Objective One Fisheries
Programme Manager has stated, "Any
assistance to promote Falmouth’s native oyster fishery should be
welcomed. Good markets for the oysters will secure better prices for
the fishermen to keep the fishery going. It is hoped the fishery
will be able to keep fishermen and merchants in jobs in the long
term".
Mr Childs commented, " We at Falmouth
Bay Oysters are indebted to SW PESCA for their
assistance in obtaining this grant.
With the additional equipment the company will be able to increase
sales and product range of Cornish shellfish thereby assisting in
safeguarding the future of the fishery and our workforce."
