NEWLYN BASED FISHING VESSEL BENEFITS FROM GRANT
July 2001
A Newlyn based vessel the ‘CKS’ has gained an
Objective One fisheries grant to aid the installation of a
refrigerated fish room on the vessel.
The new fish room will help maintain the
temperature of the fish at minus 2 degrees, which will ensure it’s
landed in pristine condition. Sectioned pounds with shelving boards
will hold more fish without squashing them, and keep the fish clean
by preventing ice melting and dripping through the fish.
The fishroom will provide the most benefit during
the summer months when fish heats up quickly due to high weather
temperatures.
Alison Elvey, Objective One
Programme Manager, is very pleased with that the project has been
approved
"Projects to improve the quality of the fish are encouraged
throughout the funding programme and this is a good example. The
project will help a fishermen keep his fish in a prime condition for
the market, thus helping the economic viability of his business and
maintain the good reputation of Cornish fish. The merchants also
benefit, as better quality means longer shelf-life of the product,
leading to better prices and higher demand "
T he
vessel owner Drew Davies, a young fisherman who has bought the ‘CKS’
as his first vessel stated " This is a much needed improvement in
my vessel, as the fish would be kept at the upmost quality before
reaching the market. However MAFF insisted on having 3 estimates,
which make it a very long and drawn out affair, but I would not have
been able to do the work without the help of the fisheries grant."
