The Cornish Fish Producers Organisation
(CFPO), representing many Cornish fishermen, has gained Objective 1
fisheries funding for a hake fishing trial.
With an EU imposed hake recovery plan in the
offing, the CFPO has undertaken a study to evaluate the commercial
impact of changing the size of it’s beam trawl nets.
The trial looked at whether the changes in
fishing gear would ensure that less juvenile hake were caught and
whether other marketable species were lost.
Alison Elvey, Objective 1 programme manager
commented: "Projects testing new types
of fishing gear should be encouraged, especially if mandatory
measures imposing fishing gears are to be introduced. The industry
needs to know if they will practically work and not greatly effect
the viability of fishing businesses. I hope that Objective 1 funds
will be able to help further projects like this."
