PORT ISAAC
FISHERMAN RECEIVES OBJECTIVE 1 GRANT
May 2003
Callum Greenhalgh a Port Isaac shell fisherman
has been awarded an Objective 1 Fisheries grant for over £1,600. The
grant will be used to upgrade a store and install tanks for his
lobster catch and purchase scales.
Callum lands shellfish daily so at the end of
a days fishing brings his catch ashore. Before the grant he did not
have a suitable storage facility to keep his shellfish. The pots
were stored in a public place making them vulnerable to bad weather
and unsecured.
With the new store and tanks the lobsters and
other shellfish will be handled less which helps keep them in good
condition.
The scales will enable Callum to weigh his
catch more accurately.
Callum Greenhalgh commented "Without
the Objective 1 grant, made possible with the help and advice from
South West Pesca, the project would not have got off the ground. The
added value and availability not dependent upon the weather makes
for a more optimistic future in shellfish."
Alison Elvey Objective 1 Fisheries Programme Manger added "The
more fisherman Objective 1 can help keep their fish as fresh and of
high quality as possible, is good news for the fishing industry as a
whole. I am pleased to see Port Isaac fishermen apply for grants to
support their valuable shellfish."
