NEW ICE PLANT & SCALES FOR PENBERTH COVE
Penberth Winch society has secured £2500 of Objective One Fisheries
Grant money for the installation of an Ice Machine and Digital
Scales at Penberth Cove.
Having their own ice machine at the cove will allow the Penberth
fishermen to produce ice as and when required. This means fishermen
can take ice to sea and ice their catch immediately upon landing.
Keeping the fish well-iced will ensure that the quality of the catch
meets buyer’s demands and optimum prices are gained at market. The
new ice machine will also be time and cost effective as previously
ice was bought from Newlyn and transported across to Penberth.
The
purchase of digital scales will not only improve the accuracy and
consistency of the weights, but will also speed up the weighing
process allowing the catch to be iced quicker and so also improving
the catch quality.
The
project will help to secure the future of the fishing industry at
the cove as reduced costs and increased profitability will ensure
the cove remains a viable landing site.
Ted
Chappell, Secretary of the Penbirth Winch Society said that “All the
Penberth fishermen are delighted with the new scales and ice
machine”
Clare Leverton, Objective One Fisheries Programme Manager commented
“It’s great to be able to help a small group of inshore men to
improve their lot. Any similar groups wanting to upgrade their
landing facilities will be given assistance by South West Pesca. To
apply for grant aid please call 01872 270 333”
