The first Newquay Fish Festival held 13/14 September in Newquay
Harbour has been hailed as a huge success. The good weather brought
crowds of people down to enjoy the wet fish and shellfish displays
and cookery demonstrations by local chefs from Finns Restaurant,
Dolphin Restaurant, the Fort, Hotel Bristol, Lusty Glaze Beach
Restaurant, Porth Veor Manor Hotel Restaurant and St Austell
College.
The event was funded by the Objective One Fisheries Programme and
supported by Seafish as part of the ‘Fish Forever’ campaign to
promote fish locally. Further funding by Newquay Town Council helped
to provide additional entertainment for the event including a Jazz
Band and Celtic Band, Newquay Zoo painted fishy faces on the
children and the Blue Reef Aquarium brought their rock pool road
show to intrigue the crowds.
Event organiser Gill Moore from Newquay for Excellence Training
was thrilled with the response, she said "We were absolutely
delighted with the support from the local community for the event, a
great weekend was had by all and we are already thinking of ways to
build on this great start for next year".
Alison Elvey, Objective One Fisheries Programme Manager
commented, "It was great to see the Newquay fishing community
so enthusiastic and positive about the event. It is hoped that this
will now become a regular festival to promote fish caught locally".
