NEW
CALENDAR KEEPS ‘NAKED FISHERMEN’ UNDER WRAPS
Following the success of its ‘Naked Fishermen’
calendars, this year the Duchy Fish Quota Company (DFQC) has allowed
the fishermen to keep their clothes on and have produced their 2006
calendar to celebrate the best of Cornish fish with recipes from the
cream of Cornwall’s culinary talents.
The new calendar depicts the net-to-plate story with each page
featuring a fantastic recipe designed by a top Cornish chef. The
DFQC has worked with Seafood Cornwall to ensure that the fish used
in each month’s recipe are fish that will be in season in that
particular month and therefore readily available to the consumer.
The serious side is that the future of the Cornish
fishing industry is under threat as it becomes increasingly
difficult for young fishermen to enter the industry. All fishing
vessels over 10 metres in length must have fish quota, which gives
them the basic right to fish.
The Duchy Fish Quota Company is a not-for-profit industry-led
initiative, to buy quota and lease it to fishermen, thereby ensuring
young fishermen can establish themselves within the industry, and
also help those who need to lease extra quota when required.
Colin Warwick,
Chairman of
Duchy Fish Quota
Company added: "We are trying to raise public awareness for
the need to buy and protect quota for our fishermen. It is not just
a matter affecting those directly involved in the fishing industry,
but one which has wider repercussions for all of us living and
working in
Cornwall. We would
like to say a big “thank you” to everyone who supports us by
purchasing a calendar".
The 2006 DFQC Seafood calendar has been designed by Graeme and
Rust of Truro and is produced solely in Cornwall. To secure

Update on our progress…
The Cornish fleet has access to some of the UK’s cleanest waters and diverse fishing grounds with over sixty species of fish available. With your help and support the Duchy Fish Quota Company purchased its first quota, which was leased to Cornish Fishermen in 2004. This was a landmark in reversing the trend of quota decline in Cornwall. It is providing the opportunity to build a sustainable fishery and ensure the future of fishing communities for generations to come.
The Duchy Fish Quota Company is a not-for-profit-company as all money received from leasing the quota to fishermen is re-invested in the company to buy more quota. Skipper Drew Davies supports this, “there is a genuine need for the Duchy Fish Quota Company, as they are supporting the local fishermen and keeping fish quota within Cornwall”.
Although we have purchased our first package of quota we still have a long way to go to reach our ultimate goal of securing £1 million of quota for Cornwall. All quota purchased will be held in perpetuity in Cornwall for the benefit of Cornish fishermen, the Cornish fishing industry and all those associated with it.
