OBJECTIVE 1 SUPPORTS CONTINUED BUSINESS EXPANSION AT
W HARVEY & SONS
Newlyn based shellfish merchant, W Harvey & Sons, has
recently been awarded an Objective 1 Fisheries grant of over
£15,000.
This is the third project in as many years for which
W Harvey and Sons have secured Objective One investment which has
helped them to expand the business and to create new products in a
growing but highly competitive sector.
This most recent grant has helped towards buying
equipment to package and present new products for their expanding
range of customers. The company has bought a tray sealing machine
that has improved presentation and packaging, making the product
easy to stack, label and display.
The company now presents new products such as
cocktail claws, dressed crabs in the shell, whole cooked claws, and
gourmet packs of various shellfish meats, all in a format to suit
their customers. Careful processing and sealing in trays gives a
shelf life of 3 weeks.
Matthew Harvey, a partner at W Harvey & Sons, Newlyn
said, “The new products and packaging mean
that we have increased our sales, and we have gained new UK and
European customers. So far customers comments on the new products
and packaging is fantastic”
Adding value to Cornish seafood through processing
and product development is a high priority for the Fisheries
Programme. The Objective One grant aid is targeted at projects like
this one by the Fisheries Task Force Strategy. Sam Lambourn, Chair
of the Task Force said “This is a top
priority project in the Fisheries Strategy as it increases wealth
and employment in Cornwall. The Task Force is now looking forward
to the next 10 years at how to develop the industry further”
