GRANT WILL KEEP TRAWL FISH FRESH

April 2004

A Cornish fisherman has been awarded nearly £800 of Objective One Fisheries grant to improve the quality of fish caught on his vessel.

The fishroom aboard the “Girl Jane”, which catches mainly lemon sole, john dory and other whitefish, will be insulated, reducing loss of ice and keeping the catch chilled until it is landed to his home port of Polperro.  Hygiene conditions for keeping the fish will also be improved.  This work will improve the quality of the fish being landed, therefore helping to attract the highest price for the catch.

Clare Leverton of South West Pesca Ltd said “It is hard to imagine a more mouth-watering choice of fish than the Girl Jane’s catch and the fact that it is now brought to market fresh and chilled will ensure that the skipper achieves the best possible price for his efforts.”
